When I first started working for myself I initially concentrated on providing Sales & Marketing consultancy to companies involved in the Electronics Industry and particularly companies involved in Radio Frequency (RF) design.  I had studied Physics at Otago University in New Zealand and, from 1980 through to 2001, I worked for a number of Electronics companies and gained a wide range of experience in the RF market.

In 2001 I started working for myself and provided consultancy to a wide range of companies.  Gradually I moved into the Building Surveying market and in 2005 I founded the internet company Local Surveyors Direct (www.localsurveyorsdirect.co.uk).  This is a price comparison website which helps people find specialists in the property industry.

People looking to purchase a property will need to consider obtaining a Homebuyer Report or a more comprehensive full Building Survey.  By entering their property details onto the website they will be able to instantly obtain a number of estimates directly from Building Surveyors who cover the local area.  The prospective buyer can then deal directly with the Surveyor which means that they will be able to open up a direct line of communication.  At the same time, because there is no middle man, the buyer is likely to end up with a very favourable price.

Local Surveyors Direct started in 2005 offering just Building Surveys but the website has now progressed on to provide a number of other services as follows:

Structural inspections for customers who require a Structural Engineer to investigate possible subsidence in a building or to look at suspicious cracks in walls.  This service is mainly carried out by Chartered Engineers but some Chartered Surveyors also provide this.

Architectural design from Architects and Surveyors.  For customers who wish to make alterations to their property or wish to build a new property, planning permission applications can be very involved and so expert help is required.  Also the production of drawings to implement ideas in the best way possible are always best done by an expert.  If walls are being knocked out then Building Regulations approval may also be required.

Electrical inspections and reports.  Properties with old wiring need to be looked at by an experienced Electrician to ensure that there is no risk of fire or electrical hazard.  Many houses with very old wiring will need to be completely rewired to make them safe.  Electricians can also provide other services such as running in new extensions, wiring up a new oven etc.

Drainage inspections and CCTV surveys.  Blocked drains can cause serious problems if not fixed relatively quickly.  Estimates from drainage experts can be obtained very quickly.
